Chapter 9

“Remind me why we’re not up in their dorm room yet?” Gunnar grouched.

“You’re just mad that you lost the bet.” I muttered softly, scouting the hallway for either people or cameras.

“No, I’m mad that these bastards stole my car and murdered another person. Right in front of us. But I’m also wondering why we’re trying to break into the Chemistry department’s storage room when the thieves are in a dorm. Or why you wouldn’t let me call in an APB on my ride.”

“I need to grab something. And I already explained, we can’t afford to get the authorities involved by calling in an APB.”

He relented on the car. It seemed to have been his only priority on our ride here in the dirty cab. “You need to grab something that’s neatly locked up in a secure Chemistry storage room? Probably locked away for a very good reason, I bet.”

“Yes.” The coast was clear. If we could wrap this up quickly we could still make it to dinner. I motioned Gunnar to follow me, eating up the fact that I was going to – hopefully – finally try something I had wanted to test out for months. And the fact that Gunnar had no idea what that was and hated it. It was heaven.

I darted up to the door and cast out my power, questing blindly for the tumblers on the old-fashioned lock. Luckily it wasn’t a magnetic reader. Then I would have been forced to break down the door. And I wasn’t even sure if they had what I wanted. It took me a few seconds before the door clicked open and I ducked inside, Gunnar on my heels. I heard no alarm, but then again the good ones would be silent to a thief, instead sending a notification to campus security so they could swiftly, quietly, apprehend the thieves. We needed to hurry. The room was obviously dark so I cast a faint orb of light to hover over my shoulder as I made my way to the storage tanks I saw chained against the back wall. My excitement grew.

“Does this have anything to do with the balloons you just had to buy at that convenience store on the taxi ride over here?”

“Yes.” I answered softly. “Now be quiet. I need to focus here.”

“Wait. You’re not going to make a bomb or anything are you? I know you have a copy of the Anarchist Cookbook. You better not be doing anything illegal.”

“You mean like breaking into a locked room in a campus where we have no business being, let alone at night?” I answered drily. I was just glad there had been no classes in session.

“Fine. Anything dangerous then.”

“Of course it’s dangerous. Look at your accomplice.”

“Why did you have to go and use that word?” he mumbled urgently under his breath. I quickly scanned the pressurized gas tanks along the wall, reading their contents. I almost gave up until I came to the last one. The label was facing the wall.
